A man can’t accept that his overbearing mother has died. Then he discovers she hasn’t gone anywhere exotic: she has moved to a suburb of north London, and death seems to suit her.
The North London Book of the Dead is a 15-minute comedy drama directed by Jake Lushington and adapted from a short story by Will Self. Simon Block wrote the screenplay. Ed Gaughan plays the son and Gwen Taylor plays the mother. Jake Polonsky was the cinematographer. The film was made around 2011–2012 and screened at the London Short Film Festival in January 2013. It was then part of the official selection at the 2014 Greenhorn festival.
For filmmakers
Adapting published fiction can give a short film a strong premise, but you need the rights first. Our guide to writing a short film script covers adaptation and how to option a short story.
